Chemical Industry and Hazardous Materials Sector Challenges
According to the National Strategy for Homeland Security "assurance of supply is critical to downstream users of chemical products for various reasons......Agricultural chemicals, particularly fertilizers, must be applied in large volumes during very short time periods....Improving security can be expensive but their are cost-effective steps that industry can take to reduce vulnerabilities.
The chemical industry in the U.S. is quickly mobilizing to address this new potential cause of catastrophic chemical accidents, those caused by terrorist acts.
KEMWorks' chemical engineers can help you analyze your chemical security risks. Several similar methodologies are available. AIChE's Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS®) has developed Guidelines for Analyzing and Managing the Security Vulnerabilities at Fixed Chemical Sites.
The CCPS SVA approach has been identified by the American Chemistry Council as one of the recommended methods for their member companies to employ in conducting analyses at their facilities as part of the Responsible Care® security code.
The SVA will, at a minimum, address these five steps:
1. Project planning 2. Site characterization 3. Threat identification 4. Vulnerability analysis 5. Countermeasures assessment
KEMWorks can also assist with an Enterprise Level Screening in a multi-site company prior to conducting the SVA.
